History of Our Lady of the Rosary feast day

The memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary (originally ‘Our Lady of Victories’) commemorates the battle of Lepanto (7 Oct 1571) when the Christian fleet defeated the Turks. The victory was attributed by Pope St Pius V to the recitation of the Holy Rosary. This great Marian prayer is traced back to St Dominic de Guzman who preached against the Albigensian heresy in the 13th Century. This year is the 450th anniversary of the Battle of Lepanto and the first memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary.
